Step one is to take care of dust and dirt. The best way to tackle this is to wipe rooms from top to bottom.

  1. Remove cobwebs from ceilings and corners
  2. Dust reachable surfaces – wardrobes, shelving and cupboards
  3. Wipe accumulated dust and dirt from top of doors
  4. Wipe accumulated dust from top of picture frames
  5. Wipe and polish mirrors, pictures and other wall hangings
  6. Wipe off dust from skirting boards and decorations
  7. Dust off all light fittings and lampshades
  8. Clean and polish metal ornaments
  9. Wipe and polish switches
  10. Carefully clean power sockets and extension cords
  11. Mop hard floors and laminate

Dirt and mildew are most visible and least tolerable in bathrooms. Toilets, showers, tiles and baths should be cleaned and polished as well as possible.

  1. Clean basins, taps and fittings
  2. Remove hard water stains
  3. Remove limescale if present
  4. Scrub and rinse soap dispensers
  5. Wipe and polish radiators and towel rails
  6. Scrub and rinse toilet and bidet
  7. Clean plumbing behind toilet if reachable
  8. Wipe marks and stains from shower screens
  9. Scrub and rinse bath marks and signs of mildew
  10. Make sure to clean drains
  11. Wipe and polish mirrors and glass surfaces
  12. Descale, rinse and wipe showerheads, taps and metal surfaces
  13. Scrub and rinse accumulated dirt from the toothbrush area
  14. Clean extractor fans
  15. Wipe reachable bathroom tiles

Cleaning the kitchen is a quarter of the job. Your kitchen is most likely to be the most used room, not to mention the most heavily exposed to various germs and dirt.

  1. Wash and polish all worktops, countertops and the sink area
  2. Clean inside cupboards, drawers and shelving
  3. Wash and polish sinks and shine taps
  4. Remove accumulated limescale
  5. De-grease and polish wall tiles
  6. Remove mould growth between grout
  7. Clean and de-grease ovens internally and externally
  8. Clean grime from extractors and hobs
  9. Scrub gas rings and gas control knobs
  10. Clean microwaves inside and out
  11. Clean out the fridge/freezer
  12. Clean the washing machine inside and out
  13. Clean the dishwasher inside and out
  14. Clean exterior of all appliances
  15. Clean outside of cupboards and drawers
  16. Clean inside of windows and wipe down sills, ledges and frames
  17. Wipe dirt from woodwork (doors, handles, doorframes, furnishings and skirting boards)
  18. Wipe down radiators if applicable and accessible
  19. Remove dust from plugs and light switches
  20. Vacuum, mop and polish floors

Landlords or their letting agents will pick up dirty furnishings upon their inspections. You must carefully wipe, vacuum and clean all furnishings.

  1. Wipe and polish tables, countertops and other worktop surfaces
  2. Make sure you remove all fingerprints and marks
  3. Look our for oil stains
  4. Move all furnishings to vacuum underneath
  5. Wipe and polish all wooden units
  1. Remove cobwebs

  3. Clean and polish windows internally, sills, ledges
  4. Wipe down doors and clean on top of doors
  5. Clean skirting boards and wood works of dust
  6. Clean light switches & fittings, lamp shades, plugs, sockets,
  7. Clean inside, behind and on top of cupboards.
  8. Clean behind and under furniture
  9. Dust and polish all surfaces
  10. Vacuum and mop hard floors

Carpets always come under scrutiny from landlords/letting agents. Carpet cleaning is one of the hardest jobs to tackle, but the best way to do it is to hire a carpet cleaning cleaning specialist. 

  1. Thoroughly vacuum all carpet edges
  2. Move furniture and vacuum underneath
  3. Steam clean, if possible
  4. Try hand-washing stains if a carpet cleaning machine is not available

Everything within your rental property should be subject to a thorough clean before you move out. Cleaning the inside of the windows is no exception.

  1. Remove any marks, fingerprints and oily stains
  2. Wipe down to prevent streaks when drying
  3. Dust off and clean windowsills
  4. Wipe down frames
  5. Dust off blinds, curtains and shades

It’s quite common to forget to clear a drawer or cupboard that you don’t use often. Always inspect each drawer, cupboard and shelf.

  1. Clear drawers inside and out
  2. Remove any unnecessary items or leftover goods
  3. Wipe down the inside and out
  4. Wipe around handles

You will need to check your tenancy agreement regarding your responsibilities on cleaning appliances.

The dishwasher

  1. Clean the dishwasher of food and soap deposits
  2. Remove all dirt, mildew and food deposits
  3. Inspect and clean filters
  4. Wipe the rubber seal
  5. Move it and clean underneath and behind
  6. Wipe the soap dispenser drawer and remove marks and stains
  7. Wipe down handles

There are many smaller tasks that you’ll also have to remember in order to get your full deposit back. Remember to:

  1. Clean and dry all kitchen tiles
  2. Get rid of leftover rubbish
  3. Rinse out rubbish bins
  4. De-grease fans and extractors

Tenants, make sure to tick off everything on this cleaning checklist (but check your tenancy agreement first!) to have the greatest chance of getting your full deposit back when you move out
